Joining the Candace House Board

Thank you for considering joining the Candace House Board of Directors. Our Board helps ensure Candace House remains strong, sustainable and responsive to the victims, survivors and families we serve.

 

What does the Board do?

 

The Board provides governance and strategic oversight. This includes financial stewardship, organizational policy and risk, strategic direction, oversight and support of the Executive Director, and helping ensure Candace House stays accountable to its mission.

 

The Board governs the organization; staff are responsible for day-to-day operations.

 

What do we expect from Board members?

 

Board members are expected to:

 

• Attend and prepare for Board meetings;

• Participate in committees or special projects as needed;

• Contribute their knowledge, experience, and perspective;

• Act as ambassadors for Candace House and help strengthen community relationships; and

• Support fundraising and organizational sustainability in ways that make sense for their skills and networks.

 

Who are we looking for?

We welcome applications from anyone who is passionate about Candace House and believes they can contribute to our work.

​

We are particularly interested in strengthening representation on our Board and strongly encourage applications from Indigenous, Black and racialized people, as well as individuals whose lived, cultural or community experience reflects the families we serve.

​

We also value experience in areas such as governance, finance, law, human resources, fundraising, communications, government/community relations, and justice or victim services.

Previous Board experience is an asset, but not required.

 

What is the commitment?

​

The Board generally meets once a month in the evening, with a break over the summer. Meetings are typically 1–2 hours and may be held online or in person.

​

Board service also includes preparing for meetings, occasional committee or planning work, and participating in important Candace House activities and events when possible.

​

Above all, we are looking for people who will show up, ask thoughtful questions, contribute what they know, be willing to learn, and care deeply about the future of Candace House.
